Mimicking neutron star precession by polar cap current-pattern drifting
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose a model for rotating current patterns within radiopulsar polar cap accelerators which has observational consequences that mimic those which have been attributed to neutron star precession. The model is a simple extension of a commonly used one for the origin of the ”drifting subpulses” often observed within the pulse envelope of radiopulsars. The new model’s current pattern rotation period (with respect to the neutron star) is estimated to be of order a year. Associated with that rotation are small oscillations in spin-down torque, pulse arrival time, and radiobeam direction with this same period. These have estimated magnitudes which support a possible reinterpretation of precession ”observations” which could resolve the problem of obtaining the required precession parameters with canonical neutron star models.

The Nonradial Oscillation Node Precession of Neutron Stars
The standing wave nodes of nonradial oscillations on a neutron star crust will drift with a definite angle velocity around rotational pole due to the rotation of neutron stars. This is called the nonradial oscillation node precession of neutron stars. This article estimated the precession velocity and pointed out that it merely lies on the star’s rotation velocity and the angular order of spher...
متن کاملPsr 0943 + 10 : a Bare Strange Star ?
Recent work by Rankin & Deshpande strongly suggests that there exist strong " micro-storms " rotating around the magnetic axis of the 1.1s pulsar PSR 0943+10. Such a feature hints that most probably the large-voltage vacuum gap proposed by Ruderman & Sutherland (RS) does exist in the pulsar polar cap. However, there are severe arguments against the formation of the RS-type gap in pulsars, since...
متن کاملPulsar Magnetospheric Emission Mapping: Images and Implications of Polar-Cap Weather
The beautiful sequences of “drifting” subpulses observed in some radio pulsars have been regarded as among the most salient and potentially instructive characteristics of their emission, not least because they have appeared to represent a system of subbeams in motion within the emission zone of the star. Numerous studies of these “drift” sequences have been published, and a model of their gener...
متن کاملMagnetic field evolution of accreting neutron stars
We study the evolution of the magnetic field of an accreting neutron star in the frozen field and incompressible fluid approximations. The plasma is accreted onto two polar caps and squeezes some of the surface material of the neutron star toward the equator. The frozen B-field is then pushed toward the equator and is eventually buried there. The magnetic field within the polar cap areas, which...
متن کاملTitle On the origin of X-ray emission from millisecond pulsars in 47 Tucanae
The observed spectra and X-ray luminosities of millisecond pulsars in 47 Tuc can be interpreted in the context of theoretical models based on strong, small-scale, multipole fields on the neutron star surface. For multipole fields that are relatively strong compared to the large-scale dipole field, the emitted X-rays are thermal and likely result from polar cap heating associated with the return...
